Castres claimed a crucial 26-18 victory against La Rochelle, while there were also Top 14 wins for Toulon, Agen, Oyonnax, Clermont, Lyon and Toulouse.

The result takes Castres to sixth in the standings, and into the semi-final qualifiers as it stands, with just two rounds remaining.

La Rochelle, who started the season brilliantly, have fallen off the pace in recent weeks and their top-six aspirations were dealt another blow with this defeat at home.

Castres led 10-3 at the break thanks to a converted try by Alex Tulou and a penalty by Ben Urdapilleta.

The hosts looked to be launching a comeback in the second half as a penalty and unconverted try got them within two with the score at 13-11. Castres went on to score 10 unanswered points, before La Rochelle struck back with a second try, but Urdapilleta had the final say with a penalty to seal the win for the visitors.

In other results, Chris Ashton scored a record 22nd try of the season to guide Toulon to a stunning 32-17 triumph over log leaders Montpellier, while Agen secured an important 33-22 win against Pau and now need just one log point from their last two matches to avoid relegation.

In a basement battle, Oyonnax beat Brive 40-17 to move off the bottom of table and above their victims, prop Jaco van Tonder crashed over for a try as Clermont defeated Bordeaux 33-3, Lyon thrashed Stade Français 44-3 and Toulouse ran in five tries to beat Racing 42-27.

Round 24 results:

La Rochelle 18 Castres 26
Toulon 32 Montpellier 17
Pau 22 Agen 33
Oyonnax 40 Brive 17
Clermont 33 Bordeaux 3
