‘Lions have too few black players’

While the Lions are winning Super Rugby matches, they have failed to meet SA Rugby's transformation targets.

According to Rapport, SA Rugby will be in the firing line on Monday when the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) makes its report on transformation in South African sport. The EPG's report will address issues of transformation in the five major federations – football, rugby, cricket, athletics and netball.

Three of South Africa's six Super Rugby teams meet SA Rugby's transformation target of 35% – the Kings, Stormers and Bulls – while the Cheetahs (24%) and Sharks (27%) can do better. The Lions have only 17% black players in their ranks.

Lions president Kevin de Klerk said his union had failed to meet the target because of a lack of money.
