Arrested duo spent 40 hours in cells

James O'Connor and Ali Williams were locked in separate police cells alongside hardened French gangsters and drug dealers.

The duo were arrested over the weekend for buying cocaine outside a Paris nightclub.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Williams (35) got into a car with two drug dealers and bought 2.4 grams of cocaine, while O'Connor (26) waited outside. As the former Test players walked back into the club, the police swooped and Williams dropped three bags of cocaine onto the ground.

The Daily Telegraph claims both men were drunk when arrested and put into separate 'sobering cells' alongside drunk and drug-affected suspects.

While O'Connor later tested positive for cocaine at the police station, he only received a fine because the police didn't see him handle any drugs. Williams, though, has been charged with buying cocaine and will have to appear in court.

If found guilty, Williams faces anything from having to attend a drug awareness course or perhaps a year in prison and a small fine, to five years in prison and the much bigger fine of R1-million. However, he has reportedly made a plea bargain with French authorities.

Meanwhile, O'Connor will return to Toulon with his hopes of negotiating a new contract in tatters.
