Savea pulls out of sevens

Hurricanes flank Ardie Savea has ruled himself out of contention for the New Zealand Sevens Olympic team in order to concentrate on 15s.

Savea was part of the sevens side that won back to back competitions in Wellington and Sydney, and would have joined the trials for the Olympic team in June.

Neil Sorenson of New Zealand Rugby said he was disappointed about Savea's decision.

'He could well have made a huge impact at Rio as he’s a classy player and he proved that in Wellington and Sydney. However, we understand his reasons. As we said from the outset of our Rio programme, playing sevens was very much a personal choice for players.'
