Winter coming to the Cape

Director of rugby Gert Smal has welcomed the acquisition of Russell Winter as the Stormers' new forwards coach.

Winter, who has coached the Lions’ U21 and Vodacom Cup sides for the past five seasons, will work under incoming coach Eddie Jones during next year's new-look Vodacom Super Rugby competition.

'We have followed Russell’s career very closely and believe he can add massive value at Western Province rugby,' Smal said. 'He brings huge tactical nous, having worked as an assistant and head coach for some time now, and is technically very strong in all aspects of forward play. I look forward to seeing how he fits into Eddie’s coaching team.'

Winter will serve as an assistant alongside Robbie Fleck (attack) and Paul Treu (defence), with Vlok Cilliers continuing in his role as kicking coach. The 40-year-old will also be involved in Western Province's Currie Cup campaign, where he will join head coach John Dobson and Dawie Snyman (attack), as well as Treu and Cilliers, on the coaching staff.
