Boishaai battle past Affies

Paarl Boys' beat Affies 19-14, while there were also wins for Grey College, Paarl Gim, Paul Roos, Glenwood, Oakdale, Stellenberg and Boland Landbou on day three of the Wildeklawer festival in Kimberley. DYLAN JACK reports.

In an end-to-end clash, Boishaai were made to work hard to extend their unbeaten run against South African teams, as they went 14-5 behind against an Affies side who were full value for their lead, thanks to some clinical attacking and strong defending.

After an intense opening period where both sides came close ― but neither could finish off their chances ― Boishaai opened the scoring when captain Adrian Alberts went on a strong run and offloaded from the ground to tighthead prop Rhynardt Rijnsburger, who scored.

However, Affies worked their way into the Boishaai half and wing Eric Sherman ran onto an inside pass from flyhalf Regardt Roets and managed to sprint clear to dot down. Roets added the conversion to give his team the lead.

WRAP: Grey High Festival (Day 2)

Paarl Boys' came out firing in the second half, but were again well nullified by some excellent defending from Affies. Instead, it was the boys from Pretoria who extended their lead when they burst into the 22 with inside centre Dian Nordier running a good line to cross over.

Boishaai then struck back with lock Emile van Heerden falling over the line, after a number of carries from the forwards. They then took the lead as coach Sean Erasmus rung the changes to good effect, with replacement scrumhalf Vian van der Sandt sniping through a gap to reach over and score.

Affies' hopes of victory received a further blow when, in the closing minutes, scrumhalf Steyn van der Spuy was yellow-carded for an intentional knock-down, with Paarl Boys' closing the game out for the victory.

In the day's other results, Grey College beat Monument 36-21 having led 31-7 at half-time, thanks to tries from lock George Cronjé, No 8 Werner Gouws, centre Wyclef Vlitoor and flank WJ Steenkamp.

Monnas hit back in the second half, scoring through flyhalf Byron-Lee Wentink and flank Tristan Dullisear, but Grey College sealed the win when wing Ian Small-Smith scored a late try.

Paul Roos again demonstrated their ruthlessness as they swatted aside Waterkloof 56-5, Glenwood's Rynhardt Jonker scored a brace to earn a hard-fought 27-13 win against Outeniqua, Paarl Gim secured a 24-7 win against Welkom Gim, Oakdale powered past EG Jasen 46-21, Stellenberg scored seven tries to hammer Noord Kaap 52-12 and in the late kickoff, Boland Landbou edged Helpmekaar 35-21.
