Blitzboks suffer shock defeat in Hong Kong

The Blitzboks were humbled by Spain at the SVNS World Championship tournament in Hong Kong on Friday.

Having edged Uruguay 12-7 in a scrappy opener, South Africa slumped to a 31-12 defeat to Los Leones, who led 14-0 at half-time.

Spain attacked straight from the kick-off and after multiple phases Tobias Sainz-Trapaga dotted down, with Francisco Cosculluela adding the extras.

It was all Spain against an out-of-sorts Blitzboks, who made basic errors and fell off tackles throughout the game.

Seconds before half-time, Eduardo Lopez scythed through the defence to score under the posts.

Straight after the break, Sainz-Trapaga burst through Impie Visser’s attempted tackle for Spain’s third try.

The Blitzboks responded with a long-range Shilton van Wyk score which Ronald Brown converted.

However, Spain hit back with a second try to Lopez before Jeremy Trevithick dotted down.

Donovon Don’s late try offered little consolation for the Blitzboks, who face Argentina in their final pool match on Saturday (6:13am SA time).
