The Blitzboks finished the pool stage of the Dubai Sevens unbeaten after they beat England 19-14 in the final match of day two on Friday.
The South Africans topped Pool D and will face Argentina in the cup quarter-finals, while England take on France. Both France and Argentina managed to keep Fiji out of the main draw, with the Islanders failing to make the cup quarters.
The Blitzboks, who beat Kenya and Spain in their first two matches, were 14-0 down halfway through the second half after Ruhan Nel was sent to the sin bin. England made use of their numerical advantage and scored two converted tries through Ollie Lindsay-Hague and Dan Norton.
However, the Blitzboks hit back after the hooter when Ryan Oosthuizen finished spectacularly in the right corner following a training ground move in England’s 22.
The Blitzboks looked a lot more threatening on attack when Selwyn Davids took the field shortly before half-time. He played a big part in Ootshuizen’s try, while he also had a hand in Justin Geduld’s second half brace, which gave the South Africans the win.
