Bloem stadium snubbed for Bok Tests

The Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein has reportedly been downgraded to a Class C venue by SA Rugby for Springbok Test matches.

According to Sunday publication Rapport, this classification means the Free State capital is unlikely to host high-profile international games in the future.

Saru has reportedly ranked Loftus Versfeld, Ellis Park, Kings Park, Cape Town Stadium and FNB Stadium as Class A venues, ensuring them priority for marquee fixtures. Mbombela Stadium and Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium fall into Class B, while Bloemfontein and Royal Bafokeng are placed in Class C.

Rapport suggests Bloemfontein’s limited flight access and accommodation played a role in the decision. While Tests may still be played there, they are expected to be lower-profile fixtures.

It is also understood that under its new hosting model, Saru will take full control of hosting Springbok Tests, paying unions a fixed amount while assuming financial risk. The governing body is also centralising ticket sales through its app.
