The Springboks and Argentina are eyeing a Rugby Championship showdown at Twickenham in 2025, according to reports from England.
If finalized, it would mark the first Rugby Championship clash in London since 2016, when Argentina faced Australia in front of a crowd of 48,500.
Although no official statement has come from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) regarding this fixture, a spokesperson told CityAM that Twickenham, as “the home of English rugby,” is their preferred venue for major international matches in London.
Still, the RFU emphasized that no agreement is currently in place for a South Africa-Argentina fixture.
According to a report by CityAM, the RFU is eager to maximize Twickenham’s usage, following a recent £100 million, 10-year stadium sponsorship deal with Allianz. This partnership aims to support a planned refurbishment of the 82,000-capacity stadium, partially funded through an expanded events calendar, including non-sporting attractions and rugby matches not necessarily involving England.
For both Argentina and South Africa, Twickenham isn’t unfamiliar territory. The Springboks have featured at Twickenham twice in the past year alone, with a clash against New Zealand ahead of the 2023 World Cup and a game against Wales before the July internationals.
Argentina are also slated to face England at Twickenham next November.
