Boland edge Lions XV

The Boland Cavaliers beat the Golden Lions XV 28-24 on Saturday, while there were also Currie Cup Qualifier wins for the Pumas and Western Province.

It was an exciting encounter in Grabouw that saw the hosts overturn a 14-point deficit.

The Lions made a positive start to the game and turned the chances they created into points via early tries by centre Jacques Nel and flank Victor Sekekete. The hosts pulled seven back when hooker Chadley Wenn barged over the tryline, but a penalty pushed the Lions' lead to double digits again.

But Boland were not deterred and two tries from centre Robert Louw and wing Sergio Torrens in quick succession put them 21-17 up at the break.

The lead exchanged hands again shortly after the restart when Sekekete completed his brace, and that is how it stayed for the best part of the second half.

Boland conceded a yellow card when replacement Danwel Demas was sent off and fullback Nico Scheepers missed two penalty attempts, but centre Robert Louw then scored the winning try.

Elsewhere, the Pumas crushed the Griffons 60-17 in Nelspruit, and Western Province hammered the Welwitchias 71-7 in Windhoek to finish top of the log.
