Durbanville High has suspended its first XV coach, Shaun Huygen, following allegations of his alleged involvement in the use of illegal substances.
According to a report on Netwerk24, Huygen was temporarily suspended pending an investigation after an ex-Durbanville High player issued a statement claiming the coach helped him to inject an illegal substance.
The former player matriculated in 2018 and is believed to have played under Huygen last year.
The chairman of Durbanville’s governing body, Deon Fabel, confirmed Huygen knew the pupil used an illegal substance at the time it happened.
‘The pupil asked for advice on how he could play better rugby and Huygen apparently told him to “bulk up”, but he did not mean for the pupil to dope,’ Fabel said.
Huygen, who is also the school’s director of rugby, vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
‘I can do nothing else but to deny it. I don’t know much more and I have to wait until the investigation against me is completed,’ he explained.
The news broke in the week of Durbanville’s annual derby against bitter rivals Stellenberg on Saturday.
