Everitt not worrying about contract extension

Former Sharks coach Sean Everitt says his focus remains firmly on the job at hand amid speculation over his future with Edinburgh.

The South African is in the final six months of his current contract, having been promoted from senior coach to head coach in January 2024 when he agreed an extension through to the end of this season.

Despite ongoing discussions between Scottish Rugby and Everitt, clarity on the 56-year-old’s long-term position has yet to emerge.

Everitt, though, is refusing to be drawn into contract talk.

“For me, it’s about doing the best that I can in my job,” he said after naming his team for Friday night’s Investec Champions Cup clash against Gloucester at home. “I can’t worry about my future at the club.

“To be quite honest, there’s a lot more things going on at the moment rather than worrying about a contract. I focus on the job at hand and being true to myself and true to the club, and that’s what matters.”

When Scottish Rugby announced contract renewals for national coach Gregor Townsend and Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith last September, de facto performance director David Nucifora suggested talks with Everitt would follow soon.

“It’s unusual you actually get two coaches signed up at the same time, so I think the chance of pulling off the trifecta was pretty low,” Nucifora said. “We’ve spoken to Sean and we’ll continue to speak to Sean over the next few weeks and we’ll work out where that’s heading as well.”

However, there has been no apparent further movement amid a series of mixed results for Edinburgh.

The team lost three of their opening four Vodacom URC matches – all by margins of three points or fewer – while back-to-back defeats to local rivals Glasgow over the festive period did little to ease pressure.

However, last weekend’s win over Benetton in Treviso lifted them to within two points of the URC playoff places, with a game in hand.

A memorable victory over Toulon last month kept their Champions Cup campaign alive, and the clash against Gloucester presents a chance to move closer to the knockouts.
