Former captain Stephen Moore has launched into Rugby Australia for not doing enough to develop coaches, while calling the decision to hire Eddie Jones as Wallabies coach a “panicked decision”.
Moore was speaking to the Daily Mail in a wide-ranging interview on the state of rugby in Australia, during which the 129-Test former hooker admitted he is ‘disillusioned’.
The 39-year-old, who retired in 2017 as the second-most capped Wallaby, took particular grievance with Rugby Australia’s decision to sack Dave Rennie and then hire Eddie Jones, who himself had been let go from his role has England coach.
Over and above hiring Jones, who previously coached the Wallabies between 2001 and 2005, Moore was concerned that no other Australian coaches seemed to apply for the role.
“(Hiring Jones) is almost a panicked decision because Eddie got sacked by England and they had to move quickly,” Moore said.
“We haven’t grown our own coaches like we should’ve and now it’s biting us. Whenever the Wallabies job comes up, we’re scratching our heads about who could fill that role.”
Moore also raised an issue with Rugby Australia not producing enough on-field leaders, as Wallabies captains Michael Hooper and James Slipper are about to enter the latter parts of their respective careers.
“We seem to be taking a very short-term view on the success of the Wallabies and the game more generally,’ he said.
“We don’t have a long-term vision for the game, and it’s a big problem because we continue to regress over time… we’re floundering at every level.”
