A late comeback attempt fell short of saving the Blitzboks from a narrow loss to old foes Fiji in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Sevens on Sunday.
Having had their 36-game unbeaten run ended by the USA on Saturday, the Blitzboks were looking to bounce back and get themselves through to the cup semi-finals.
However, a poor start to each half gave Fiji a 12-point lead to defend, and that they did to win 19-12 despite a brave late comeback attempt from South Africa.
Tries from Zain Davids and Siviwe Soyizwapi put the Blitzboks back into the contest and there was a glimmer of hope when they won a penalty in Fiji territory with 30 seconds to play. With time up on the clock, Darren Adonis was excellently tackled out just as he went for the corner.
