Having welcomed back veterans Dylan Sage and Siviwe Soyizwapi to the team, the Blitzboks dominated their opening fixture, opening the scoring in the first 90 seconds through captain Selvyn Davids.
Playmaker Dewald Human converted Davids’ try and scored one himself to give South Africa a 12-0 lead at the break.
The Blitzboks continued their momentum in the second half, as Impi Visser dotted down after a 50m linebreak from Christie Grobbelaar, before the big forward turned provider by winning a turnover and popping the ball to put Tristan Leyds away down the left wing.
Sage and Soyizwapi were both called off the bench, with the former making an immediate impact in his first Sevens Series game since 2018, nearly creating a try with a linebreak.
Rosko Specman, playing in his landmark 35th tournament, combined with Leyds for the Blitzboks’ fifth try, before Spain grabbed a consolation score in overtime.
The Blitzboks are next in action against Samoa at 1.18pm on Friday afternoon (South Africa time).
