Wallabies centre Matt Giteau is set to be sidelined for four months after breaking his ankle in Sydney last Saturday.

The 33-year-old will return to France ahead of surgery at the start of next week, Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal confirmed to AFP on Tuesday.

Giteau will therefore miss a large chunk of Toulon's Top 14 campaign and some European Champions Cup games.

Toulon began their Top 14 campaign with a loss to recently promoted Bayonne last weekend.
