Grey College scored 10 tries to annihilate Grey High 58-0 in Bloemfontein on Saturday afternoon.
With an unblemished record over the past two seasons, Grey College were always favoured to come out victors from this game. But that they would be met by so little resistance from Wasps was unexpected.
Wing Marcell Muller scored a hat-trick, but forwards Jan-Hendrik Wessels (lock) and Andre-Hugo Venter (hooker) were the star performers and both were rewarded with a brace of tries.
To their credit, Grey High held their own in a closely fought first half. They only conceded two tries to trail by 12 at the break.
But the visitors from Port Elizabeth had no answer to College’s all-out attack approach in the second half and the floodgates opened.
College played at a ferocious pace from the outset and punished Grey High from turnover possession.
Captain and school headboy Ian Small-Smith, younger brother of William, scored soon after the restart. And tries by Wessels, Venter, Muller, fullback Franco Knoetze and Montpellier-bound flyhalf FC du Plessis underlined College’s domination and compounded Grey High’s misery.
Grey College – Tries: Marcell Muller (3), Andre-Hugo Venter (2), Jan-Hendrik Wessels (2), Ian Small-Smith, Franco Knoetze, FC du Plessis. Conversions: Du Plessis (4).
