Khan hat-trick helps Bishops win Cape derby

Imad Khan scored a hat-trick of tries as Bishops strode to a 50-10 victory in the Cape derby against Rondebosch at the Piley Rees field in one of a handful of schools rugby matches on Saturday.

As certain schools were able to resume competitive rugby in another Covid-19-affected season, Bishops hosted Rondebosch in a Premier Interschools derby, with no spectators attending the match due to pandemic regulations.

Both 1st XV teams played enterprising and entertaining rugby despite wet and slippery conditions after heavy rains in Cape Town.

However, it was Bishops who ultimately proved to be the stronger and more clinical of the two teams as they scored seven tries, including three from man-of-the-match Khan, who also grabbed five conversions and a penalty.

Rondebosch dominated territory and possession for most of the first half, but struggled to break down Bishops’ defence.

Tries from wings Jack Pace and Rupert Holmes gave the hosts a 15-7 lead at the break.

Flyhalf Jacques Jooste kicked a penalty for Rondebosch to narrow the gap to just five points, but Bishops went on a try-scoring rampage as captain Jonathan Roche and loosehead prop Josh Mansfield score in between Khan’s three tries.

In the other Cape derby of the day, Wynberg claimed a 43-5 win over SACS.

In other results, Maritzburg College fought hard to beat hosts Hilton 14-10 in a wet-weather clash played in brutal conditions at Hilton College.

In the big northern game Pretoria Boys’ High took on Hoërskool Monument in Pretoria. The visitors proved too strong as they won 52-7, with flank Evan Retief scoring a hat-trick of tries.
