Libbok ‘requests’ Stormers release

Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok is reportedly seeking a full release from his Stormers contract.

Recent reports suggested that the World Cup and Vodacom URC winner might pursue a sabbatical in Japan before returning to Cape Town, but according to Netwerk24, Libbok seeks a permanent exit as his position in the pecking order appears to have changed.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, contracted until 2027, has emerged as the preferred option at No 10 for the Stormers.

Libbok is sidelined for Saturday’s URC round 17 clash against Dragons at Cape Town Stadium due to medical clearance issues, and could potentially play his final home game for the Cape outfit next Friday against Cardiff.

Meanwhile, the Stormers have taken a firm stance regarding Springbok flanker Ben-Jason Dixon’s contract dispute, which heads to arbitration.

“It’s a matter of principle. What we didn’t like was that the laundry was washed in public. We don’t like being in conflict with a player. There has never been an arbitration case between Western Province and a player since 1992,” director of rugby John Dobson was quoted by Netwerk24.

“What I do know beyond a shadow of a doubt – based on the person that BJ is – is that he will still give his all if he loses the arbitration case.

“We will respect the arbitrator’s ruling, but we are convinced that the outcome will be in our favour.”
