The Sharks have confirmed that Springbok World Cup-winning wing Makazole Mapimpi has extended his contract through to 2023.
Mapimpi joined the Durban-based side from the Cheetahs in 2018 on a two-year deal, and now the Sharks have successfully tied him down for a longer stay.
This new deal comes a few months after the 30-year-old Mapimpi’s excellent display for the Springboks at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
The 30-year-old was also sought after during SA Rugby’s 21-day exit window earlier this year, which allowed players to cancel current contracts in favour of overseas offers if they so wished.
Instead, Mapimpi will link up with Johan Ackermann’s Red Hurricanes in Japan later this year on a ‘sabbatical’ of sorts and return in April 2021.
