Melbourne to miss out on 2027 World Cup

The 100,000 capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground will not host any matches in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

According to the Herald Sun, Marvel Stadium (formerly known as Docklands Stadium) and AAMI Park, the home of the now defunct Melbourne Rebels, also won’t be used during the six-week tournament.

The MCG will host a Test between the Wallabies and British & Irish Lions in July this year.

The report states that Victoria has been shut out of the World Cup completely after the state government withdrew its bid in a protest over the decision to remove the Rebels from Super Rugby.

Sydney’s 82,000-capacity Stadium Australia (now known as Accor Stadium for sponsorship reasons) will reportedly host both semi-finals and the final of the 2027 World Cup, as it did in 2003 when Australia last hosted the tournament.

Perth’s Optus Stadium is the front-runner to host the opening match, which is certain to involve the Wallabies.
