Nienaber’s Leinster ‘suffocate’ opposition

Glasgow attack coach Nigel Carolan expects “very aggressive defence” from Leinster in their Investec Champions Cup quarter-final in Dublin on Friday.

The Warriors booked their place in the last-eight with a first-ever Champions Cup playoff win, 43-19 against Leicester at Scotstoun Stadium, while Leinster humiliated Harlequins 62-0 at Croke Park.

The rampant Irish club ran in 10 tries, but just as impressive was their ability to keep Quins scoreless.

“Leinster show their quality if you’re in any way vulnerable or if you don’t go in with the right frame of mind,” Carolan said. “So, for us we need to be brave. We need to bring the best version of our game on the field. It’s action beats reaction. We can’t wait to see what Leinster do.

“You know what they’re going to do with ball in hand. They’re extremely dangerous. They’ve got some real quality players. With [defence coach] Jacques Nienaber they have a very aggressive defence that most teams struggle to deal with. It’s very uncomfortable. Leinster are very good at suffocating you.”

Carolan said Glasgow would have to “get comfortable being uncomfortable” at training this week.

“[Leinster’s defence is] challenging you to find solutions,” he added. “As we build towards Friday, if we can do that with confidence, we’ll travel with a smile on our face and look forward to the game. It’s two quality teams in a great stadium going into battle and I think it could be a great spectacle.

“It will have a real Test feel to it but we have to be aggressive. If you let those things bother you, if you let them get on top of you, then they will.

“For us, just getting on the front foot nice and early, travel with confidence, not get bogged down on the opposition, who we’re playing, where we’re playing, what’s happened in the past. Just embrace where we’re at now and keep building.”
