Ntamack slams double-standard bans

France flyhalf Romain Ntamack has called for consistency in sanctions for foul play.

Ntamack received a three-week ban for the red card he received for a dangerous tackle on opposite number Ben Thomas in the 43-0 thrashing of Wales in the opening match of the Six Nations in Paris.

The 25-year-old was not allowed to include a club match for Toulouse in the suspension, which was reduced to two matches after he completed World Rugby’s Coaching Intervention Programme.

Ireland centre Garry Ringrose received a red card for a similar tackle against Wales in Cardiff in round three but only missed one Test – against France in Dublin last weekend – after being allowed to count a game for Leinster in his three-match ban (also reduced to two).

“There is an injustice here, because I believe our case was also based around how one of the matches in my suspension I would play for Toulouse,” Ntamack said ahead of Saturday’s game against Scotland.

“And when 10 days later the complete opposite [for Ringrose] is decided in contrast to what the commission told me, that is in every shape and form totally incomprehensible.

“I think we must start pounding our fist on the table because it is time these decisions going against us and costing us dearly stop.”

Ntamack said he also had an opinion on the incident in Dublin last Saturday that led to France captain Antoine Dupont’s season-ending knee injury but would keep it to himself.

“It is always upsetting when a player is injured in such an incident. It is never very clear in this type of situation,” he added.

“There will be a debate round rucks forever. I think, though, it is imperative that we all sit around a table and clarify it a little.”
