Ireland captain Paul O'Connell has been ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury.

The 35-year-old lock sustained the injury at the end of the first half of the Pool D decider against France in Cardiff, and will undergo surgery this week.

He has been replaced in the squad by Mike McCarthy.
