Province maul Lions in Currie Cup opener

Western Province made the perfect start to their Currie Cup campaign by cruising to a bonus-point victory over the Lions in an opening round clash in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Following a tightly contested opening 25 minutes, Western Province streaked away with the game, using the maul and flyhalf Kade Wolhuter’s boot to good affect to claim a 44-28 victory at Ellis Park.

Tries from Keke Morabe, Suleiman Hartzenberg and Andre-Hugo Venter either side of half time pushed the visitors into a healthy lead.

This came after Province were just three points ahead, thanks to Wolhuter’s long-range penalty – after the two teams had scored two tries each in the opening exchanges.

The youthful Lions side finished the game strongly and snatched a four-try bonus point of their own when lock Raynard Roets’ try was followed up by Junior Springbok scrumhalf Nico Steyn.
