Centre Jonathan Danty won’t forgive Springbok powerhouse Pieter-Steph du Toit over what the Frenchman describes as an ‘injustice’ at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Speaking to Midi Olympique, Danty said he believes Du Toit should have been penalised for a head-high clearout during hosts France’s 29-28 quarter-final defeat to eventual champions South Africa.
“It’s an injustice,” he told Midi Olympique. “But beyond that action, it’s over the whole match. I was looking at the big screen, expecting the TMO to intervene, but nothing happened.”
Danty compared the incident to a similar one in 2022 when Du Toit was red-carded for a reckless clearance on him during a November Test.
“He sent me a message to apologise for the first one,” Danty said. “But the second time, it was a fairly similar action. It’s surprising it wasn’t reviewed.”
His frustration extends beyond the match, and has quashed suggestions of reconciliation: “Having a drink with Pieter-Steph du Toit in 10 years? No way.”
