The RFU is reportedly set to announce record financial losses approaching £40 million, which is likely to intensify scrutiny of CEO Bill Sweeney.
According to The Telegraph in the UK, the staggering deficit is said to be one of the largest recorded by an English sports governing body.
This figure surpasses the £30.9 million loss in 2018, which led to then-CEO Steve Brown’s resignation.

The RFU attributes this year’s deficit to England’s World Cup campaign in France, which reduced Twickenham’s match-day revenue, and significant investments that are not reflected in the headline loss.
Sweeney, already under pressure following England’s poor November results, faces further challenges. Critics point to cost-cutting measures, including recent staff redundancies, despite lucrative sponsorship deals like the £100m Allianz agreement.
The RFU council is expected to address the matter during its meeting next week.
