Bordeaux thumper Rohan Janse van Rensburg joined the club of South African Champions Cup winners in Cardiff on Saturday as the country’s foreign legion impressed across Europe and Japan.
Champions Cup:
Former Sharks centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg played off the bench at the Principality Stadium as Bordeaux beat the Northampton Saints 28-20 to clinch their first Champions Cup title.
Challenge Cup:
Johann van Graan’s Bath, powered by props Thomas du Toit and Frans van Wyk stormed to a 37-12 victory against Lyon to lift the Challenge Cup trophy in Cardiff. Former Bulls No 8 Arno Botha crossed the whitewash for Lyon.
Japan League One:
Willie Potgieter started at flank for Kobe Steel in a devastating 31-3 defeat to Brave Lupus in Saturday’s semi-final.
Seven South Africans were on duty in Sunday’s semi-final as Kubota Spears edged the Wild Knights 28-24. Bok hooker Malcolm Marx dotted down for the Spears and supported by David Bullbring, Tyler Paul, Rikus Pretorius and Ruan Botha. For the Wild Knights, Springbok duo Lood de Jager and Damian de Allende featured in the starting XV.
Franco Mostert helped the Honda Heat secure a 29-25 win against the Kintetsu Liners in the relegation playoffs, scoring a try in the first quarter. Former Bulls centre Dawid Kellerman started in midfield for the Heat, while Jan-Hendrik Swanepoel made an appearance off the bench.
Former Lions lock Lourens Erasmus packed down for Urayasu D-Rocks, scoring a try. in their 43-42 defeat to Toyota Industries in the relegation playoffs. James Mollentze ran out for Toyota Industries as a replacement.
