Schools wrap: Paarl giants, Grey Bloem win big

There were convincing victories for Grey College, Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High on day two of the Wildeklawer rugby festival.

Grey Bloem bounced back from last week’s home loss to Gimmies with an eight-try, 56-14 victory against Helpmekaar.

Grey flyhalf Darius Erwee scored a try and kicked all eight conversions while delivering a dominant overall performance behind a dominant forward pack. Helpmekaar, who trailed 28-7 at half-time, scored two converted tries.

Winger Cole Moultrie grabbed a brace as Paarl Boys’ beat Noordheuwel 42-14 after leading 13-7 at the break. Boishaai outscored their opponents by five tries to two, with flyhalf Iwan Jordaan kicking four conversions and three penalties.

Markus Muller scored four of Paarl Gim’s eight tries in a 46-20 win against Northwood. It was the star midfielder’s fourth hat-trick of the season. Blindside flank Hendré van Zyl excelled upfront for Gimmies and was rewarded for his high work rate with a try.

Garsfontein and Oakdale played out a thrilling 30-30 draw after the latter had led 15-10 at the break. Oakdale scored four tries, including two by No 8 Jakobus de Villiers, but flyhalf Joshua Gouws’ third penalty goal gave Garsies (who crossed the line three times) a share of the spoils.

Fullback Jade Peterson starred in Outeniqua’s 21-20 win against Monument, making several counter-attacks and scoring one of his side’s three tries. Monnas led 6-0 at the break and two second-tries weren’t enough to secure victory.

In other matches, DHS fought back from 19-12 down to defeat Stellenberg 26-19, and winger Jason Ocks scored a hat-trick in Boland Landbou’s 64-5 battering of Framesby. EG Jansen beat HTS Drostdy 20-10, Jeppe saw off Maritzburg College 36-24 and Voortrekker Bethlehem suffered a 33-7 defeat to Rustenburg.
