The former Scotland flyhalf, who has been in charge of the national team since 2017, Townsend will be out of contract after the France-based global showpiece.
FRANCE COACH: Boks still best in the world
French publication Midi Olympique has reported that the 49-year-old is among the candidates who have applied for the role France attack coach.
Laurent Labit, who currently holds the position, will be leaving Les Bleus to take up a role with Top 14 side Stade Francais.
France head coach Fabien Galthie reportedly wanted Pierre Mignoni to fill the position, but he has decided to stay on as Toulon head coach.
The rumours around Townsend’s exit come just after Scotland lost South African attack coach AB Zondagh, who also has plans to move to France, weeks before the start of the Six Nations.
Zondagh previously worked in France with Toulouse in 2020 and 2021.
