Sharks retain Bok heavy

The Sharks have fended off strong competition from English clubs to retain the services of a Springbok prop.

The Durban-based club confirmed on Friday that veteran Springbok prop Vincent Koch has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Kings Park until 2028.

‘Mr Incredible’ had attracted interest from the Sale Sharks and Bath, with Bath particularly keen to lure the 118kg tighthead back to the Premiership.

Bath director of rugby Johann van Graan is a long-time admirer of Koch and the Premiership champions reportedly viewed him as a replacement for influential prop Thomas du Toit, who is set to return to Durban.

Koch has earned 63 Test caps for the Springboks, with his most recent appearances coming against Italy and Georgia last year.

The experienced prop signed for Wasps ahead of the 2022-23 season, but was left without a club when the Premiership outfit went into administration.

Despite renewed interest from England, Koch has opted to remain in Durban.

The Sharks also announced on Friday that Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi has extended his contract until 2028, while also securing the services of young lock Coetzee le Roux until 2027 and loose forward Matt Romao until 2029.
