Smith seals Lions departure

The Lions have announced that they have agreed to a ‘mutual separation’ with loosehead prop Dylan Smith with immediate effect.

Smith has played his entire professional career at the Lions, making his senior debut in the 2014 Vodacom Cup, with his Currie Cup and Super Rugby debuts following in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

The 27-year-old, who has played over 50 games for the Joburg side, has recently been rotated with Sti Sithole during the Super Rugby Unlocked and 2020 Currie Cup tournaments.

In an official announcement on Monday, the Lions emphasised that they ‘share fond memories’ with Smith.

‘I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Lions all the best for the future,’ Smith said.

‘A big thank you to the players, coaches and administrators, you have all made such a big impact on my life over these last eight years.

‘Lastly, thanks to the Lions’ loyal fans. It has been a privilege to play for you. Wishing the boys all the success in the future.’

Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli wished Smith all the best for the future.

‘It has been incredible watching you develop into the player you are today,’ Straeuli said. ‘All the best, Bulldog.’
