Speight out of Olympics

Henry Speight has been ruled out of the Olympic Games in Rio after suffering a medial knee ligament injury on Tuesday.

Speight was playing for the Australia Sevens team against a national development side in his first game back since sustaining a facial fracture, when he tore his ligaments.

The 28-year-old speedster is expected to be sidelined for at least three months, ruling him out of the Olympics and the remainder of the Brumbies' Super Rugby season. Speight could, however, return to action for the Wallabies against the Springboks in Brisbane during the Rugby Championship on 10 September.

'We’re all gutted for Henry. He made a commitment to the programme and has done everything he possibly could to get himself in the frame for Olympic selection,' said Australia Sevens coach Andy Friend. 'On behalf of everyone at the Australian Sevens program, we would like to wish Henry all the best in his recovery.'
