Fleck: Stormers come before Boks

Stormers back Damian Willemse Damian Willemse

Stormers coach Robbie Fleck says Damian Willemse’s starting position in Super Rugby next year will depend on where the team needs him.

With Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus having indicated that Willemse’s best shot at making the World Cup squad will be as a fullback, rather than flyhalf, the youngster wants to make that shift at the Stormers.

However, while Fleck understands why Willemse is eager to get the No 15 jersey, he says he will select the player in a position that will benefit the Cape side.

‘He is keen to give fullback a crack, but the team will come first and whatever position we need him at, we will play him,’ said Fleck.

‘He understands that. He’s a wonderfully talented player and it’s our responsibility as the Stormers and as coaches to look after him and develop him. We’ll try and help out SA Rugby as much as we can, but it will be Stormers first, and the players understand that.’

Fleck hinted that while the competition at flyhalf is strong, he would prefer to have Willemse at No 10.
