Rohan Janse van Rensburg marked his first start for Bordeaux by helping end Toulouse’s winning streak, while Dillyn Leyds and Hacjivah Dayimani faced off in the fourth round of the French Top 14.
– Rohan Janse van Rensburg made his first start for Bordeaux in a 16-12 away win over star-studded defending champions Toulouse. The former Sharks centre, who made a successful debut off the bench in round three, played 57 minutes as Bordeaux ended Toulouse’s five-game winning run, handing the title holders their first home league loss in two-and-a-half years. Carlu Sadie was among the substitutes for Bordeaux, who top the table after winning three of their opening four games.
– Strugglers Perpignan, with Marvin Orie at lock, opened their account for the season with a sensational 33-3 victory over Clermont. Jaco van Tonder was at flank for Perpignan. It was Orie’s third start in four games, after the World Cup-winning lock started just 12 out of 21 games last season.
– Dillyn Leyds came away with the bragging rights in the battle of two former Stormers, as La Rochelle snatched a 17-16 away win against Racing 92. Hacjivah Dayimani started at No 8 for Racing, who were 16-9 up going into the final 10 minutes, before La Rochelle scored a try and a last-minute penalty. It was La Rochelle’s third win of the season, while Racing, who had Owen Farrell at flyhalf, have won just one of their opening fixtures.
– Arno Botha scored the decisive try as Lyon claimed a thrilling 40-38 home win over Castres. The former Bulls captain buried his way over in the 67th minute to give Lyon enough of a buffer to see out a comeback from the visitors in a match that saw eight tries scored in total.
– Bayonne, with Uzair Cassiem at No 8, saw off a second-half comeback from Montpellier to win 28-27 after leading 15-0 at half time. Madosh Tambwe was on the wing for Montpellier.
– Stade Francais’ stuttering start to the season continued in a 30-16 away loss against Pau. Former Sharks stars JJ van der Mescht and Jeremy Ward started for Stade, who had Joe Jonas at fullback. Stade have won only one of their first four games of the season.
