The nine Varsity Cup university teams have each unveiled their captains for the 2020 season in Johannesburg on Friday.
Defending champions Maties are among those who will have a new captain for the new season, with Stormers lock Ben-Jason Dixon wearing the armband this year.
CUT will also have a high-profile name leading them for the first time as former Blitzbok Heino Bezuidenhout has been named as their new captain.
Meanwhile, UP Tuks and the UWC Ikey Tigers have both opted for continuity, with Marius Verwey continuing to lead the Pretoria team from last season, while Liam Greenhalgh will captain the Tigers after leading them during last year’s University World Cup.
The 2020 Varsity Cup kicks off on Monday, 3 February. In round one UP-Tuks host NWU at LC de Villiers in Pretoria. Kick-off is at 4:45pm. Maties meet Shimlas at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, kicking off at 6:45pm. Both matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport 1.
In the two non-televised fixtures, which will kick off at 7pm, it’s UJ vs UCT-Ikeys at UJ Stadium and UWC vs Wits at UWC Stadium. CUT will start the tournament with a bye.
