‘Varsity Cup must be proactive’

Maties coach Hawies Fourie says Varsity Cup games should be played as Super Rugby curtain-raisers.

The university competition has already had two rounds of fixtures postponed due to continued unrest at campuses around the country.

Fourie says it is becoming increasingly frustrating for coaches and players not knowing what the way forward is.

‘I can’t think it can be that difficult to solve the problem [of games being postponed],’ Fourie told Die Burger. ‘Games can be played at Newlands, or elsewhere, as curtain-raisers in the Super Rugby tournament. We have to be proactive.’

Fourie says this would allow the Varsity Cup to resume and prevent situations like that in Bloemfontein on 22 February when students and protesters clashed during a Shimlas vs NMMU game.
