Joe Brial’s stunning try in Hamilton on Friday gave the Reds hope, but the victorious Chiefs had the final say, leapfrogging their Aussie rivals to claim top spot in Super Rugby.
The hosts battled through torrential rain to triumph 27-15 at Waikato Stadium. Both teams crossed the whitewash three times, but Damian McKenzie’s flawless kicking proved the difference.

Brial’s 40-metre chase and finish just before half time had the visitors level at 10-10, but their missed chances after the break proved costly.
Luke Jacobson’s early try set the tone for the Chiefs, while Samisoni Taukei’aho powered over from a maul before Xavier Roe sealed the result. Tom Lynagh grabbed a late consolation, but the home side were too clinical.
