• WSU storm to record Varsity Shield win

2018 Varsity Shield finalists WSU gave the DUT Rhinos a less-than-warm welcome to the competition with a record-breaking 136-11 victory in Pretoria on Monday.

The result was a record Varsity Shield win for WSU, who signalled their intent to come first this year after finishing as runners-up in 2018 and semi-finalists in 2019.

There were a total of 22 tries scored, 11 of those in the first half as WSU wasted no time in galloping to a 62-8 lead at half time.

It will come as a rude awakening to the level of competition in the Shield for the Durban University of Technology, who are participating in their very first Varsity tournament after being nominated as new entrants by University Sports South Africa (USSA).

Having initially played under College Rovers in 2016, the DUT Rhinos were only formally incepted in 2017, after winning promotion from their USSA division.
