WP too good for Blue Bulls

Angelo Davids scored a brace as Western Province thumped the Blue Bulls 34-12 on day three of the U16 Grant Khomo Week in Oudtshoorn.

In a lively start, Province opened the scoring when outside centre Durin Nasson sliced through the Bulls defence for the opening try. The boys from Pretoria hit back with two tries from outside centre Bjorkan Hendricks and flyhalf Charles Goedhals, with the latter succeeding with one conversion. But No 5 lock Ian Kitwanga barged over the line on the stroke of half-time for a converted effort, which saw WP take a slender 14-12 lead into the break.

The Cape side took control of the match early in the second stanza, extending their advantage to 21-12 after Davids, who started on the right wing, sliced through the brittle Bulls defence for his first try. It became somewhat of a blow-out, as fullback Thaakir Abrahams ran in WP's fourth try before Davids completed the rout with his second of the day. The Bulls looked disjointed on attack and were kept scoreless for the remainder of the match.

Meanwhile, a late try by flank Yanga Hlalu saw the Golden Lions snatch a 31-24 victory against KwaZulu-Natal. The Lions raced out to a 17-5 lead inside the first 20 minutes, but after they were reduced to 14 boys, KZN responded with two converted tries to lead 19-17 at half-time.

The sides exchanged tries again, but a missed conversion by KZN's replacement goal-kicker Dylan Kruger saw the Lions draw level at 24-24. Both teams tried hard to work their way back into the lead, but it was the Lions who managed to break the deadlock when Hlalu bundled over the line with less than three minutes remaining. Fullback Kennedy Mpeku added the conversion.

Elsewhere, the Limpopo Blue Bulls registered a 30-17 victory over the SWD Eagles. Limpopo led 20-3 after running in two converted tries and two penalties in a dominant first half. SWD fought back after the interval with Llyle Metembo scoring a brace to increase their tally to 17, but two more scores by Limpopo handed them the victory.

In other results, Border annihilated the Leopards 49-0; the Pumas erased a seven-point deficit to draw 24-24 with Boland; Eastern Province upset Free State 34-17; Griquas Country Districts defeated Border Country Districts 26-3; Griquas edged the Valke 19-17; Zimbabwe won their international match against Namibia 21-7; and the Griffons toppled the SWD Eagles XV 17-12.
