Magazine exclusive: Nienaber talks to us

In the latest issue of SA Rugby magazine, on sale this week, new Bok coach Jacques Nienaber discusses the vision to lead the world champions to even greater heights.

Over the past week, there has been a lot of background noise related to SA rugby, with rumours of a possible move into northern-hemisphere competitions, while further reports have indicated that England had some interest in securing the services of Rassie Erasmus in the near future.

However, the good news is that Erasmus is expected to sign a contract extension to remain with South Africa until at least the next World Cup, which will have him continue to work closely with newly appointed head coach Nienaber.

With so much on the go, in the latest issue of SA Rugby magazine, we’ve sought to explore some of the background stories you rarely get to read or hear about.

In one of these must-read features, chief writer Jon Cardinelli sat down with Nienaber at the SA Rugby head office. Nienaber’s career path from physiotherapist to the helm of the Springboks is a remarkable story, and the man in the top job insists he’s up for the challenge.

In our March issue, Nienaber details his working relationship with Erasmus, and how the two have forged a bond aimed exclusively at strengthening the teams they are involved with.

Nienaber is fully aware of the challenges that lie in wait as he takes over the top job, but is also clear-minded about how he can work with a settled Springbok management team to ensure the 2019 world champions continue to adapt and innovate.

It’s abundantly apparent from the conversation that the Boks will not be resting on their laurels after the World Cup success in Japan, and in fact there is a belief that a talented young team is ‘destined for more’.

Make sure you get your hands on this latest issue of SA Rugby magazine, which also features exclusive interviews with Bongi Mbonambi, Cobus Reinach, Inny Radebe, Hilton Lobberts and JC Pretorius among a host of other insightful features.
