SARugbymag.co.za readers have emphatically shouted down plans to lower the tackle height, with the overwhelming majority of those polled calling for the laws around the tackle to remain unchanged.
On Monday, World Rugby recommended reducing the permitted tackle height to below the sternum (the middle of the chest) in the amateur game. If approved by the international federation’s Council in May, national unions will be given the choice of opting-in to a global trial.

SA Rugby said it would now consult with its member unions and the South African Schools Rugby Association (SASRA) on their views on the proposal prior to a potential roll-out of the trial in SA. If the trial is deployed in South Africa, it would impact the school and club game.
In a poll run by SARugbymag.co.za, almost 80% of voters were adamant that it is not necessary to change the current tackle-height, and that anything below the shoulders is safe.
Thirteen percent of readers agreed with the proposed idea of tackling below the sternum, less than 2% were in favour of outlawing tackles above the waist, and 8% have thrown in the towel and believe the game is headed for a downgrade to touch rugby.
