Former SA Rugby Football Union managing director Rian Oberholzer will reportedly soon be appointed as SA Rugby’s new acting CEO.
According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Oberholzer and SARU president Mark Alexander have come to an agreement on his position, but await the approval of the sports body’s executive committee.
However, it is uncertain how Oberholzer’s current role as chief administrator and oversight of Western Province Rugby’s affairs – at the behest of SARU in 2021 – will affect his appointment.
KEO: WP ‘needs money, not elitist nostalgia’
“The process takes time, among other things, because of all the obstacles Mark had to overcome with the appointment,” a source was quoted by Rapport.
“For example, he first had to organise another meeting of the executive committee for next week to ratify Rian’s appointment.
“I am unsure what will happen to Rian’s position at WP Rugby Union, where he was appointed by SARU as the administrator. However, it should not overlap.”
Oberholzer is a seasoned administrator having served as Sanzaar’s CEO at the launch of Super Rugby, before taking over the SA Rugby position between 1996 and 2003.
