There have been many iterations of the Sharks’ renowned black jersey, which one is your favourite?
The Sharks are up next in a poll series aimed at unveiling the top jersey from each of the Vodacom Bulls, Cheetahs, Lions, Sharks and DHL Stormers.
1996
With the South African Currie Cup teams sent into battle for the 1996 Super 12 season, the Sharks surprised everyone by finishing inaugural runners-up after losing to Auckland in the final.
The kit featured white shorts accompanied a black jersey that was split in the middle by a single white hoop that was also incorporated into the sleeves.
1998
The Coastal Sharks, as they were known then, donned a jersey in 1998 that featured a bit more colour to represent a franchise that included Border and Eastern Province.
2001
Designed by Canterbury, the 2001 Sharks jersey was black from the waist up with the iconic grey running above the chest, around the shoulders and finding some space around the flanks.
Although they fell at the last hurdle, the jersey went all the way to the 2001 Super 12 final against the Brumbies.
2007
The Sharks repped a grey and black jersey in 2007 as they returned to the Super Rugby final, this time against the Bulls.
2014
The Sharks’ BLK kit of 2014 was arguably their cleanest of all time.
The South African Conference winners of the 2014 Super Rugby season donned an all-black fit that was stylised with white ‘piping’ along the flanks and upper torso.
2018
Turning comics into reality by adding a Marvel touch to real-life super heroes, the Sharks were suited up in a ‘Black Panther’ styled strip in 2018.
2022-23
The Sharks were kitted in another almost all-black fit for the 2021-22 URC season that featured red, in the form of then sponsors Cell C, to add a tinge of colour to a slick jersey.
2023-
The Sharks’ latest offering changed very little from the kit that came before it, only adding fading grey vertical lines near the bottom of the jersey, and the placement of the Sharks logo in a shield.
