Shilton van Wyk grabbed a brace of tries as the Blitzboks eased to a comfortable victory over Kenya in their tournament opener at the Sydney Sevens on Friday.
The Springbok Sevens scored five tries to get their Sydney Sevens campaign off to a flying start with a 31-5 win following a difficult end to the tournament in New Zealand last week.
Van Wyk continued his excellent form by grabbing two tries to set the Blitzboks up with a 21-0 lead at the break, as Shaun Williams dotted down just before half-time.
James Murphy, who flew over as an injury replacement for Selvyn Davids during the week, took full advantage of an overlap to all but seal the result in South Africa’s favour in the second half.
Kenya grabbed a consolation score, but they lost Edmund Anya to a yellow card for an off-the-ball tackle on Shakes Soyizwapi and the Blitzboks captain grabbed a try for himself in injury time.
The Springbok Sevens will next face Uruguay in their second pool match at 00.44am on Saturday (SA time), before taking on New Zealand at 06.49.
