In our continued ‘blast from the past’ series, we look back at the legendary Springbok front-row combination of Beast Mtawarira, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis.
Once again, there are clear standouts in our final insert in this series, with Mtawarira and the Du Plessis brothers having started in 20 Tests together.
A formidable trio up front, who together have over 250 Test caps to their name, Beast, Bismarck and Jannie enjoyed illustrious careers that spanned from the Sharks to the Springboks, and was highlighted by World Cup success in 2007.
Jannie and Mtawarira also started in 16 Tests with Adriaan Strauss, which is the second-most capped starting front-row combination for the Boks, while Os du Randt, John Smit and Eddie Andrews combined in 14 games.
Yet, it’s the Du Plessis brothers and close friend Mtawarira who will be fondly remembered for their impressive exploits in a sequence of crucial Tests.
Take a look back at some of the highlights from their careers and then let us know in the comments section what some of your best memories of these three Bok greats are.
