Former Test referee Nigel Owens has confirmed that he is in talks with Rassie Erasmus as the Springboks look to appoint him as part of their staff for the World Cup.
The Springboks are eager to add a referee coach to their staff to accompany the team for the World Cup in France later this year, with Owens the reported top candidate for SA Rugby.
MALLETT: Recruiting Owens a ‘masterstroke’
The successful candidate would be looked on to improve the relationship the Springboks, Test referees and World Rugby after some tension between the parties after the last couple of years.
Speaking to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Owens confirmed that he has been in conversation with director of rugby Erasmus over the role.
“Yes, I was approached by Rassie,” Owens said when asked about the rumours by Rapport .
“I had a good conversation with him. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say at the moment.”
Along with his off-field role, Owens would also be tasked with helping the Springboks improve their discipline and adapt to way different referees officiate Test matches.
