Steve Borthwick was left to rue his first loss as England boss after Scotland came from behind to beat the Roses at Twickenham on Saturday.
Duhan van der Merwe scored twice as Scotland made it three victories in a row against England to open their 2023 Six Nations campaign with a win.
Scotland trailed England for the majority of the second half after relinquishing a lead before the break, but a late score from Van der Merwe secured a 29-23 victory for the visitors who retained the Calcutta Cup.
Borthwick, appointed in succession to Eddie Jones after England were booed off the field at Twickenham following a lacklustre loss to world champions South Africa last time out in November, was understandably frustrated.
“Clearly we’re disappointed with the result,” he said. “Scotland have controlled this fixture in recent years and I thought they were very good.
He added: “We were hit by a couple of scores in that first half that came out of nowhere really.
“To go in at half time in the position we were in was an immense credit to the players and at 20-12 up, we shouldn’t be letting that game get away from us, but we did.

“We’ll have a look at it, and I think that’s part of the growth of the team because you’ve got to go through some pain.
“You don’t want to, but there was certainly enough there on that pitch that said I can see some aspects we’re working on, and I can see some things we need to improve.
“We got ourselves in a position to win that game and we didn’t, and we’ll look at that to make sure we are better going forward.”
Skipper Owen Farrell added: “We’re at the start of our journey at the minute. “Over the last 11 days together we feel like there has been some growth, and we feel like there has been some growth in this performance.
“Ultimately, we said we’d look at ourselves after this game and want to get better regardless of the result and that’s still the case.
“There is some stuff we can be proud of, and a lot of credit has to go to Scotland in the way they played, but it allows us to look at ourselves really well and I guess there was always going to be some errors coming from our first game together in a new system.
“But I know these boys will work hard to make sure they fix them.”
