Captain Kolisi: Leading the change

Stormers captain Siya Kolisi is on the cover of the new SA Rugby magazine, on sale this week.

In last month’s issue, we looked at the leadership role Siya Kolisi was expected to play for the Stormers in this year’s Super Rugby tournament. No sooner had it gone on sale than the Cape franchise appointed the 25-year-old flank as their new captain.

Kolisi couldn’t have hoped for a better start to his reign as the Stormers blew away the Bulls at Newlands by playing a brand of rugby normally associated with Kiwi teams.

In this issue, chief rugby writer Jon Cardinelli speaks to Kolisi about leading the change for the Stormers – in more ways than one.

We at SA Rugby magazine are also embracing change. This month sees the introduction of three new columnists – Super Rugby-winning Hurricanes assistant coach John Plumtree, former Springbok flank Thando Manana and senior rugby writer Craig Lewis. There are new elements in our upfront section, Linebreaks, a new schools derby focus, a new regular feature on black rugby legends, and a Perfect XV at the end (see Joel Stransky’s on page 114).

In the new issue:

Siya Kolisi is captaining a diverse Stormers side that has embraced a more attacking game plan

– Sharks flank Jean-Luc du Preez wants to add to his Test tally this season

– Blues back Rieko Ioane has already packed a lot into his young rugby career, though all indications are that the best is still to come
